Kumite for Gradings
Some form of kumite is required in most styles for almost every grading. The aim of kumite drills practised in classes is to build up skills of judging distance and timing, which some think are more important than the rigid adherence to technique.
Generally students start with a basic set of sparing known as gohon or sambon kumite (5/3 step sparing). This form of kumite is required by the KUGB for 9th and 8th Kyu.
Advice on Gohon kumite
Having mastered (hopefully) gohon kumite a student generally moves on to Kihon Ipon Kumite.(Basic one step). This form of Kumite is required through till at least 3rd Kyu
